Obituary “For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith.” II Timothy 4:6-7
Earnest Carswell, Jr., was born on January 9, 1936, to the parentage of Earnest Carswell, Sr., and Edna Bryant Carswell, who preceded him in death along with his siblings, Marshall Carswell, Otha Carswell, Laura Cole, and Lucy Carson. He transitioned on September 10, 2021, at Atrium Health Navicent The Medical Center, Macon, Georgia.
He received his elementary and high school education in the public schools of Twiggs County, Georgia. Having a desire to further his education, he enrolled in Tuskegee Institute (University) in Tuskegee, Alabama, and received a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Animal Science. He also obtained a Master’s of Science degree in Public Administration from Georgia College and State University in Milledgeville, Georgia.
Believing that family was God’s greatest gift to mankind, Earnest was united in holy matrimony with Elnora Robinson on December 3, 1962, a bond which lasted for 59 years. Earnest’s passion was 4-H.
After thirty years of employment, Earnest retired from the University System of Georgia, where he was employed as a Cooperative Extension Agent for Hancock County.
Having a love for God and a desire to live a life of service, Earnest joined First Baptist Church, Jeffersonville, Georgia, where he served as Sunday school teacher for the in-teen class and as president of the junior choir. In later years, he was ordained as deacon. After his tour of duty in the United States Armed Services, he relocated to Sparta, Georgia, where he joined Macedonia Baptist Church and worked in the following capacities: Deacon, Superintendent of Sunday school, Sunday school teacher, Assistant Director of the youth department, and in any other position in which he was needed.
Seeing the need to improve the plight of the citizens of Hancock County, Earnest became actively involved in political, educational, and civic endeavors, such as: Chairman of Hancock County Board of Education, organized the NAACP, and led the black voters’ registration campaign, to name a few of his accomplishments.
Earnest leaves to mourn his passing, to cherish his memory, and to celebrate his life: his loving and devoted wife, Elnora Carswell of Sparta, GA; daughter, Betty Carswell of Jeffersonville, GA; three sons, Stacey (Earnestine) Carswell of Fort Walton Beach, FL, Jerald (Lorraine) Carswell of Sanford, FL, and Elvis (Tracie) Jackson of Dallas, GA; brother, Mack (Genelda) Carswell of Macon, GA; ten grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and a multitude of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends who will miss him dearly.
