Lura Mae McGhee Gillom was born December 14, 1955, to the late Lucille McGhee and the late Johnny C. Berry. At an early age, she gave her life to the Lord and joined Union Spring Baptist Church, where she began a lifelong relationship with the Lord.
She was educated in the Warren County School System and was a graduate of the Class of 1973. After graduation, she began her career as a nurse. Later, she attended cosmetology school and theology school. She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star.
In 1975, she met the love of her life, Willie Tom Gillom. They were united in holy matrimony in 1976 and were blessed to continue this wonderful and loving relationship for thirty-three years. Throughout her life, Lura was a devoted wife to her beloved husband, a nurturing mother to her children, and a loyal friend to many. She found immense joy in simple pleasures, whether it was tending to her garden, cooking meals for her loved ones, or sharing laughter with friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two sisters, Essie Johnson and Minnie Berry, and four brothers, Willie Norman Berry, Tommie Lee Hamilton, Johnny B. Berry, and Thurmond Nealey.
She leaves to cherish her memories: two daughters, Litwauna (Jackson) Devis and Crystal Gillom, two sons, Mickel Gillom and Christopher Gillom, nine grandkids, Mickel Jr, Jakylas, Jakyla, Jeremiah, Jocelyn, Ja’Canyin, Dillon, and Adahlia, three great-grandkids, Khelani, Dream, and Kahleigh, two brothers, Robert (Elaine) Hampton and Donald (Vonita) Nealey, two sisters, Arlene Brooks and Mildred Berry, two additional brothers-in-law Willie Edward Gillom and Willie Everette Darden, five additional sisters-in-law, Dorothy Johnson, Evelyn (Bobby) Brinkley, Mildred Barksdale, Virginia Berry, and Patricia Nealey, and a host of godchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
As we bid farewell to Lura Mae, we take comfort in knowing that her spirit will live on in the hearts of those she touched. Her legacy of love, kindness, and compassion will continue to inspire us all.
