Jersey Joe “Bill” Johnson was born on June 16, 1953, to the late Bill and Bessie Johnson in Thomson, Georgia. The Lord called him home on Friday, November 15 th 2024. He was married to Jacqueline Bell and in this union had two sons Christopher and Trumaine.
Jersey graduated from Warren County High School in 1972. As a lifelong learner, he received his bachelor’s degree at Fort Valley State University. While at Fort Valley State University, he was initiated into the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. Jersey went on to Tuskegee University where he earned a master’s degree. Finally, he earned a specialist’s degree from Lincoln Memorial University in 2005. He was known as Mr. J. to his students while he worked as a horticulture/agricultural teacher at Thomson High School until his retirement in 2011. Never one to sit still for long, he worked part time at the Hancock State Prison and Warren County Public Schools until his health began to decline.
Bill as he was affectionally called by those who knew him in the community, was an avid sports fan. He loved to play basketball and tennis. He enjoyed watching college football in which he was a huge fan of the Alabama Crimson Tide.
In addition to his parents, Jersey was preceded in death by brothers Larry Johnson, Micheal Johnson, Willie Harvest Johnson, Beamon Johnson and Ronald Johnson and one sister Dorothy Jones.
He leaves to cherish his memories: his loving wife Jacqueline Johnson, sons Christopher (Antesia) and Trumaine; grandsons Zayden and Zavian; sisters Mattie Hill (Aaron) and Alfreda Johnson; one brother Willie Pierce Johnson (Sharon); close friend James Scott who was like a brother; a host of nieces and nephews; and the numerous people he befriended and mentored in the Warrenton and Thomson communities.
On behalf of the Johnson Family, we would like to give special thanks to the Health, CSRA and Allay Hospice.
