Delmar Garth Cartwright

April 11, 1939 ~ November 19, 2016 (age 77) 77 Years Old

Delmar Garth Cartwright “Del” 77 of Norwood GA passed away on Saturday  November 19, 2016 with his two youngest children by his side.

Del is survived by his children and many grandchildren as well as several siblings. Del was born in Barrhead, Alberta (Canada’s “Texas”) and was raised in a remote log cabin outside of Moose Wallow, Alberta. The childhood experiences being raised in such a remote location created a man who was stubbornly independent, self-sufficient, and a survival expert.

Del was a brilliant man, a fountainhead of knowledge, with keen intellect. He was a source of inspiration to all who knew him through his self-discipline, tireless energy, and innovative thinking. He rose from an extremely meek and financially impoverished home where all grades of school were in a single school house. From there, Del went on to attend the University of Alberta where he played baseball for the university and graduated top in his class with a degree in electrical engineering.

Del gained a position with a communications company where he met Marilyn Florence Grim ditch and soon married. Del and Marilyn raised five children, Jeff, Sandy, Jimmy, Alayne and Delmar Jr “Rob” and the family embarked on an upwardly mobile path culminating in Dad’s appointment as Vice President of Digital Switch Corporation in Dallas Texas.

Del remarried and had two more children, Delmar III and Patricia, whom he raised in Dallas Texas. While living in Texas, Del personally trained his youngest children in soccer and fostered their athletic and academic talents with the hopes of paving a way for their future and scholarship.

Del’s upbringing soon led to restlessness with “society.” He left his high paying position as vice president of a large telecommunications company and opened a home improvement business in favor of a simpler but most importantly self-sufficient lifestyle. Feeling the fast paced, high crime lifestyle in Dallas to be a bad influence on his youngest children, he moved to rural Norwood Georgia with plans to develop acreage into a guest ranch – Twin Pines Plantation and Guest Ranch.

Del was a remarkably intelligent, selfless, tough, stubbornly self-reliant, extremely opinionated, and driven man whose very existence defined perseverance. Del was also a challenging, complicated and passionate man who was at times difficult to understand. He was a god fearing man who was a strict disciplinarian who, more than anything, despised laziness and self-pity. Life to Del was what one made of it – no more - no less. God’s will often creates unexpected challenges which Del felt were upon the individual to surmount. In the face of adversity, he would state – “Do not mope around wallowing in self-pity – recognize, accept, learn, and overcome but most importantly move on.” He was a remarkably resilient and driven individual. Adversity was simply a new opportunity for learning and just another obstacle to overcome.

Del was very proud of his children and the path’s each had chosen. He instilled many of the same qualities he embodied into each of his kids and flooded his children with a full lifetime worth of love. Del also had a love for dogs whom he felt were among the most loving and loyal beings on earth. He loved outdoor activities and the very land itself. Del has left behind a rich harvest of memories to cherish, emulate, and honor and will be terribly missed.
