Cornelia Means Obituary

Obituary

We take this day that God has made to celebrate the life that to you He gave, to be happy that He blessed us with you, and to be thankful that He blessed you too.

Mrs. Cornelia S. Means was born on October 19, 1942, to the late Mr. Willie Shines and Mrs. Alma Lucious Washington Shines in Twiggs County, Georgia. She was raised by her loving Uncle and Aunt, Bennie and Ethel Roberts.

Cornelia joined First Baptist Church at an early age, where she attended and served several years. She attended Twiggs County High School, where she excelled in academics as Valedictorian and found her passion for education. She graduated from Fort Valley State College, where she received her undergraduate degree in Education. She also received her Master of Education from Georgia College. It was during this season that she met the love of her life, Augusta Means, as they were both teaching in Twiggs County. They were later married August 10, 1963. Through this union and life together were born, two children, Melvin, and Melba.

Augusta and Cornelia built their lives as educators in the Hancock County School System. Cornelia taught for several years until she became a media specialist. She invested in the lives of students and faculty members until she retired in 1998. She later became an active member of the Retired Educators Association. Cornelia was dedicated to the Lord where she served at 1st Baptist Church in Twiggs County. She later served at Macedonia Baptist Church, where her children were raised to be servants of God. She was a faithful, loving servant as a Deaconess and led Vacation Bible School for the children. She was also an active member of the SBCBRC organization and was a consistent Team Leader for Relay for Life.

Cornelia’s children and grandchildren were her pride and joy. She enjoyed family time, travel, and was an avid reader. She also received recognition and several rewards from the various organizations she served. She remained active in her church and civic organizations until her health prevented her from doing so. Cornelia was called home to be with the Lord August 2, 2022.

She leaves to celebrate and honor her life her devoted husband of 58 years, Augusta Means, son Melvin Means (Michele), daughter Melba Plant (Maurice); four grandchildren: Andrew Means (Nakia), Sydni Means, Seth Means, Erin Means; Brother Harvard Shines; three sisters in law: Dorothy Thomas (Eugene), Willie Mae Dexter, Audrey Cantrell (Willie James); brother-in-law Carl Means; and loving extended family and friends.
