Ms. Claudine Y. Nicely, was born September 16, 1930, in Norwood, Georgia.
She was the daughter of Annie and Charlie Yarbough. She spent all of her life in Georgia. She grew up with her parents and siblings on a farm in Norwood. She attended school in Norwood and enjoyed learning new things.
Claudine started her Christian journey, here at Union Spring Baptist Church. She was baptized in the creek right down the road from the church. She later joined Walker’s Chapel CME Church when she married, Willie Nicely Jr., and her last church was Freedom Worship Center in Augusta, GA.
At the young age of seventeen, Claudine Yarbough married Willie Nicely Jr. on Christmas Day in 1947. They started a journey together that lasted 63 years. The journey included seven children.
Claudine was active in her community and participated in the NAACP. She shared many stories about her church work and her love for God. She also had a love for cooking. (Her grandchildren still talk about her great pancakes.)
Claudine’s love for cooking led to her work at Norwood Elementary. She was a stay at home mom until 1970. She became a cook at Norwood Elementary, were she loved her interaction with her coworker and the kids. David, her youngest, has fond memories of them walking to school together. She retired from the school system in 1990, due to a diagnosis of breast cancer, she survive it!
Claudine was a courageous woman that put everyone’s needs ahead of her own. She was loving, giving and humble. She knows God and he is a friend of hers.
She leaves a lifetime of wonderful memories to her children: Willie (Joann) Nicely, Alvinia Liowns, Barbara Jenkins, Jannette Nicely, Joann Chester, Claudette Nicely, David (Linda) Nicely; thirteen grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren; one brother, Grady Yarbough, one sister-in-law, Annie Belle Yarbough; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins other relatives and friends who will miss her and her warm smile dearly.
