Doris Burnett Obituary

In the “wee” hours of the morning on Tuesday, September 4, 2018, Mrs. Doris Rhodes Burnett slipped from labor to rest. Born on January 23, 1927 to the late Eula Ostine Leslie and Clinton Rhodes Sr., she was the second of four siblings.  Awaiting her arrival was big brother Clinton Jr., whom she affectionately called “Jr.” and she became his “Sis”. They were “best buds” until he went to rest. Baby sister and brother, Juanita and Johnny joined them later. She enjoyed her relationship with them until they were also called to rest.

On November 7, 1945, Doris was joined in holy matrimony with David Burnett,, Sr. She bore seven children, Paulette (Marvin) B. Moore of Warrenton, GA; David (Marilyn) Burnett, Jr. of Burlington, NC; Carolyn B. Johnson of Thomson, GA; Patricia B. Davis of Atlanta, GA; Dorothy (Michael) Gray of Decatur, GA; Johnny (Cheryl) Burnett of Decatur, GA; and Annette Burnett of Warrenton, GA.

“Miss Doris” as she was known had eight grandchildren, many great and great - great grands, the Williams family, whom she adopted as her own, 2 god children, a host of nieces, nephews, and a village of other family members and friends.

Miss Doris was a master seamstress. She created beautiful clothing, a great cook, excellent baker, and most often known for her red velvet cakes. She was an avid gardener, producing luscious plants. After working at Garland and Health-Tex for many years, she retired in 1992. She was quiet, but strong, simple, yet elegant, humble, but proud. She was a mother loved by MANY. Ninety-one years, 8 months, and 12 days of labor…a job well done.
