Dea. Hornsby Brown, Sr. Obituary

Hornsby Lee Brown, Sr. was born May 10, 1935 as the eleventh child and eighth son to the late Mr. and Mrs. Fred (Estella Johnson) Brown Sr. in Warrenton, Georgia.  He departed his earthly body and entered into glory on Sunday, July 14, 2019.

Hornsby was educated in the public school system of Warren County at the then Warrenton Elementary & High School Mighty Screaming Eagles (Mildred E. Freeman) and graduated in 1958 as Salutatorian.  He also attended Paine College in Augusta, Georgia for approximately two years following high school. 

On December 24, 1964, he was married to Pauline Hawkins, which four children were born from the union. 

Hornsby was employed by the McDuffie County Hospital in Thomson, Georgia on June 1, 1965 as a Purchasing Agent until he was forced to retire in 1978 following an accident.  Following his retirement, Hornsby expanded his tax preparation business where he prepared tax returns for both individuals and small businesses.   

He joined Pleasant Grove Baptist Church at the age of 15.  He served faithfully as a member of the Choir, President of the Missionary Society, Chairman of the Program Committee, and Secretary of the Missionary Society.  He was ordained to the Deacon Board in February 1976.  He would later serve as Secretary of the Deacon Board, Assistant Chair of the Deacon Board and Chair of the Deacon Board.  He also served as Superintendent of the Sunday School, Teacher of the E.K. Culpepper Bible Class, and Superintendent Emeritus from 1998 to 2004. 

He was initiated into the Masonry at St. Barnabus Lodge #91 F & AM, PHA in December 1976 and was elected to serve as the Secretary of St. Barnabus Lodge in December 1977. 

Hornsby was preceded in death by: brothers, William Brown, Roy Brown, Kenneth Brown, Albert Brown, Fred Brown, Jr., Richard Brown, Hugh Brown, Sr.; sisters, Alean Manor, Mae Dell Ivey and Mirdis Brown Burton. 

Hornsby leaves to cherish his memory and is survived by his wife Pauline Hawkins Brown of Thomson, Georgia; brother Marion (Molly) Brown of Portsmouth, VA; “baby sister” Illene (Darwin) Kinsey of Atlanta, GA; daughter Wylene (Douglas) Mills, sons Tony (Michelle) Brown and Hornsby (Gloria) Brown, Jr. (Gloria) and daughter Tracie (Patrick) Turman; grandchildren Kischondrius (“Kiki”) Tanksley, Wyneshia Shank, Derquerius Brown, Devon (Bianca) Walls, Courtney Wright, Camiel Lawrence, Devin Rogers, Douglas Mills, Jr., Jamari Mills, Patrell Turman, Tevin (Candyn) Turman, Briana Turman, Adriauanna (“Meme”) Sturgis, and Gabriel Brown; great-grandchildren, Mason Ballard, Zayden Turman, Eliana Turman and Devinity Rogers; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
