Linton Horton

October 17, 1932 ~ January 5, 2018 (age 85) 85 Years Old

“ As for me, my life has already been poured out as an offering to God. The time of my death is near. 7 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, and I have remained faithful. 8 And now the prize awaits me—the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give me on the day of his return. And the prize is not just for me but for all who eagerly look forward to his appearing.”  II Timothy 4:6-8

Herculean in spirit, yet humble and mild at heart, Deacon Linton Horton (affectionately, “Lint” or “Red Peck”) returned to his heavenly home on January 5, 2018 at the graceful age of 85 after suffering a severe stroke.

Deacon Horton was born to Joseph and Elizabeth Horton on October 17, 1932 in Sparta, Georgia.   One of twelve children, Deacon Horton learned to value family and hard work in his youth.  As a child, he helped care for his mother and sisters and worked on their farm.  He also came to walk with Christ at an early age and began his Christian journey at Saint Galilee Baptist Church in Sparta, Georgia.

Deacon Horton moved to Atlanta, Georgia in 1954 where he worked as a barber and maintenance mechanic for Atlanta Housing Authority for 41 years.  Deacon Horton married Ruby Mae Wilson and together they had Mignon Dorsey. Deacon Horton later met and married Willie Mae Benton on July 30, 1972. They enjoyed 45 years of marriage together and gave birth to Linton Cornell Horton.

Though Deacon Horton and Willie Mae only had the one son together, they opened their home to many relatives.   As a second father to many, Deacon Horton combed and cut hair, found jobs, and offered rides.  He made a difference in the lives of many and is fondly remembered by all as a gentle man of God with a wonderful sense of humor, full of compassion and love.

In 1990, he joined Solid Rock Full Gospel Church where he was ordained a deacon and later became the senior deacon.  In 2008, he joined Second Mineral Springs Baptist Church, where he continued to serve as a deacon.

Deacon Horton is cherished by all who knew him and survived by his loving and devoted wife – Rev. Willie Mae Horton; two children – Mrs. Mignon Dorsey and Mr. Cornell (Letoyia) Horton; two sisters - Mrs. Willie Mae Hunt and Mrs. Beverly (Clarence) Griffin; two sister-in-laws Evangelist R. M. Hickson (Bishop J. L.) and Mrs. Brenda Benton; four grandchildren - Mr. Christopher (Tamara) Kelley, Mrs. Kristy (Yves) Hardy, Ms. Arielle Dorsey, Mr. Miles A. Horton. Deacon Horton also leaves behind a host of great grandchildren, cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.

“God blesses those who are humble, for they will inherit the whole earth.  God blesses those who hunger and thirst for justice, for they will be satisfied.  God blesses those who are merciful for they will be shown mercy. God blesses those whose hearts are pure, for they will see God.”
